Mackenzie Mountain School

Mackenzie Mountain School is located in the Town of Norman Wells, which is nestled in the Mackenzie Valley, and is home to roughly 140 students from grades K-12. Our mission is to promote life long learning for students and staff in a safe, supportive and respectful environment that builds cooperative relationships and appreciates cultural diversity.

The staff at MMS place great importance on literacy initiatives with a particular emphasis on the grades K-6 classes. At the heart of our elementary school instruction lies an integrated approach to teaching reading and writing known as balanced literacy.

The grades 7-12 students annually participate in a Career and Technology Studies week whereby they enroll in a week-long field of study of their choice. The students obtain valuable experience in specific practical fields of work while at the same time gaining CTS credits that count toward their graduation.

Each year a variety of extra-curricular opportunities are made available for students including a breakfast program, an on-the-land program, local and regional Science Fairs, a Heritage Fair, various sporting events, a drama club, and the list goes on.

Believing that we are stronger together, the staff and students include members of the community in our school-wide events wherever possible. As such, parents and community members are often invited to attend and/or participate in such events as our monthly assemblies, an annual Christmas dinner and school concert, the Science Fair, various presentations and speakers, etc.

Fostering a sense of community and purpose is important for staff and students at MMS. As such, we adhere to the Effective Behavior Support model of dealing with challenging behavior. Over the past decade, this model has proven effective in decreasing the need for more punitive methods of behavior management within our school. In this way, students are encouraged to become positive, productive and responsible members of our school and local community.
