Colville Lake is located just above the Arctic
Circle, 745 air km northwest of Yellowknife and has a population of about 135.
The community is accessible by air from
Norman Wells year round and has a seasonal ice road connection to Fort
Good Hope.
Colville Lake is probably one of the most
traditional communities you will find in the Northwest Territories.
Located within the traditional homeland of the North Slavey Dene, the
organization of the community did not begin until 1962 when the Roman
Catholic Mission was created. The community's economy is based on game
hunting, fishing and trapping with tourism playing a secondary role.
Colville Lake School serves 46 students
and offers a variety of programs for grades K-12. There is an emphasis
upon literacy, numeracy, traditional skills programs and on-the-land
activities.
